A COA should not be a generic template — it must be a batch-specific document containing measured values for YOUR specific lot. If your supplier cannot provide a lot-specific COA with every order, find a different supplier.

⚠️ COA Red Flags — What Makes Us Walk Away

  • No batch number — without it, the COA links to nothing. No traceability. This is the #1 red flag.
  • Purity stated as ">95%" or ">98%" — Research-grade should target ≥99%. Suppliers unwilling to specify 99% may be producing lower-purity material or using a lower resolution HPLC method.
  • COA not dated, or date older than 12 months — You may be receiving old stock with unknown storage history. A fresh COA should be issued for every shipment.
  • "Template" COA that doesn't change between orders — If the same PDF is re-sent for every order, it's not batch-specific. It's a marketing document, not a quality document.
  • No MS data provided — HPLC tells you purity; MS tells you identity. A supplier who won't share MS data may not have MS capability — and that's a serious quality infrastructure gap.

The key metric is peak area percentage — the main product peak should represent ≥99% of the total integrated area at 220 nm (peptide bond absorption). Additional small peaks indicate peptide-related impurities (deletion sequences, oxidation products) that co-elute at different retention times.

4. Peptide Content vs Purity: The Distinction That Matters

This is one of the most misunderstood concepts in peptide quality — and where many buyers overpay. Purity (≥99% by HPLC) tells you what percentage of the peptide material is the target sequence. Peptide content (typically 70–90%) tells you how much of the total powder weight is actually peptide — the rest is water, TFA counterions, and residual salts from lyophilization.

You order 10 mg of "99% pure" peptide. But the net peptide content is 80%. That means you actually have 8 mg of pure peptide — not 10 mg. If your protocol calls for 10 mg of actual peptide, you're 20% short. This is why peptide content measurement (by AAA) is critical for accurate research dosing.
